Catalog Description:
This course provides group instruction in skills and techniques of the particular instrument or voice for those with little or no previous experience. Emphasis is placed on techniques and styles and the exploration and study of appropriate literature. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in the studied skills and repertoire through performance. MUS 151J is Jazz Vocal which will include singing solos as well as scat singing and modern 4-part harmony.

Objectives:
To sing major and minor scales.
To sing blues scales, diminished scales, whole tone scales, and diminished whole tone scales.
To sing Ballads.
To sing Blues.
To do Scat singing and group singing, i.e. Manhattan Transfer.

AABA forms of music with reference to the bridge or channel
12 bar blues, a form of improvisation
Latin music - Bossa Nova, Samba, Cha Cha, etc.
Studies of key signatures - major and minor
Sight singing as related to vocal style
Scat singing as a medium for jazz vocalizing
Part singing with reference to "Manhattan Transfer" style
Evaluation:
Based on class participation and performance.
